Milton Keynes, 23/11/18. – Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan Stephens and Love Island’s Dr Alex George have opened up about their challenges tackling mental health in a new podcast recorded by SEAT and #IAMWHOLE.

Filmed and recorded inside a SEAT Ateca SUV as the stars travelled to Sunday’s Music 4 Mental Health concert, Stephens quizzed Dr Alex on the mental health issues he faced after finding fame on Love Island. He also opened up on his own struggles with anxiety and depression.

Stephens said it was especially hard for the young generation dealing with “addictive” social media and admitted he’d suppressed feelings in the past to avoid talking about them.

“I wanted to open discussion and get people on board with it,” said Stephens. “We need to deconstruct the idea that discussing mental health is exhausting because it isn’t.”

Dr Alex revealed he had struggled with his instant celebrity status after leaving the reality TV show and has decided to return to his job in the NHS to give something back and try to help others.

He said: “Being on the show [Love Island] is not good for your mental health. With the whole world watching you feel so much pressure. I went from 500 followers on Instagram to nearly 1.4 million – it is very strange.

“Coming off Love Island I didn’t know what to do. You can easily get sucked into the whole celebrity thing, believe the hype and get lost amongst it all. That’s why I’m trying to raise awareness around things that affect young people - and mental health is up there with the issue that’s most important to young people at the moment.”

Stephens added: “I would consider you [Dr Alex] to be a hero in your profession. The real heroes in society don’t get enough accolades. Doctors, therapists, councillors and teachers or labourers; there are loads of people who are working to provide stability for our society but don’t get enough credit.”

As Official Car Partner for Music 4 Mental Health, SEAT UK supported the brand-new #IAMWHOLE initiative bringing together some of the most prolific names in British music including Ed Sheeran, James Arthur, Anne-Marie and Ella Eyre for a ground-breaking fundraising concert.

The event helped raise funds for mental health charities Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), The Mix and YMCA and featured a discussion panel led by #IAMWHOLE founding ambassador Stephens. Dr Alex was among the panellists who discussed their own experiences with mental health.
